Strange biology textbook that doesn't mention the genotype, yet bothers with this definition that has very little to do with actual biology. I guess it might be there as a "not to be confused by", but it sure is strange.

100% correct In biology we don't use the term gender to define the genetic side of things, we use 'sex' as an international standard. In common english, gender is an old linguistic relic from the time some French transferred to English, and academically it's used in sociology/anthropology to discuss social behaviors related to biological sex and is not a concept you count.

So I someone feels offended that you assumed their gender just tell them that's wrong you only assume the sex. Categorizing on social traits is wrong but Categorizing on observed physiological traits is scientific and reasonable. Gender debate solved, just ignore the term.
